Make It Monday

Hi everyone, December is here and I am not quite sure what happened to the rest of 2023! I am so sorry to have been absent for most of the past month, but the good news is I have passed my driving test, I have found a local venue to teach in (probably bi-weekly) Wednesday morning workshops from mid January, I have a couple of venues in mind for a monthly all day workshop with pop up shop (just a few minor details to sort), am now a Prospect Volunteer two part days a week, and once I get a bit more driving experience on motorways etc I will be available to teach workshops or provide a pop up shop facilities both locally and further afield, again from mid January. I will provide a full calendar of planned workshops/crops/pop up shops/events for 2024 later this month so you will be able to see where I am when, and you will then be able to click and collect online orders from the venue nearest to where you live to save on shipping.

Meantime, a little Make It Monday project……

This is a little box sized to hold 3’’x 5’’ index cards and a little co-ordinating notepad, mine are intended for recipes but you could easily adapt the template to accommodate differently sized contents, such as cookies and chocolates or other small gifts. My index cards were from Mr Sainsbury but others are available, and you could cut your own, my little notepads came from The Range and again there are lots out there but you could create your own from copy paper. The paper collection I used was Around the Table by P13 and there are still a couple available in the online store at https://snazzysstudio.online/shop/p/p13-12x12-paper-pad-around-the-table

Tools and Materials

You will need 2 12x12 sheets of plain cardstock

2 12x12 sheets of patterned paper of your choice

Double sided tape/PVA type glue

Trimmer with cutting and scoring blades or equivalent

Bone folder/paper creaser & scissors

the template for the box base is below.

Simply cut a piece 113/4’’ x 93/4’’ from one of the sheets of plain cardstock and score the long edge @ 31/4’’ and 81/2’’, and the short side @ 31/4’’ and 61/2’’ as indicated by the dotted lined on the template. Use your scissors to cut away the rectangles marked with X, reducing the tabs to 11/2’, fold all the score lines and glue/tape the tabs to create the box.

The mats for the outside of the box are 51/8’’ x 31/8’’ for the front and back panels and 31/8’’ x 31/8’’ for the side panels. You can see I cut the front and sides from one length of patterned cardstock so they would match up, and I didn’t bother to add patterned cardstock to the base as it won’t be seen.

Cut a piece for the lid of the box from the second sheet of plain cardstock 67/8’’ x 47/8’’ and score at 3/4’’ on all four sides. Reduce the tabs by making small angled cuts as shown in the template as this makes for a really neat finish, and glue/tape them in place to form the lid.

I cut the mats for the lid from one piece of patterned cardstock measuring 41/2’’ x 61/2’’ so I could pattern match the pieces, not necessary but again just gives a really neat finish. To do this cut 5/8” from both long edges, top & bottom, and 5/8” from each short side as shown below. You then simple reduce both long pieces by 5/8” from each end and glue/tape to the box lid.

You could the just add your gift with a bit of scrunched up tissue or your index cards to the box but I have added three dividers to my box to keep the cards neatly separated. So if you would like to do this cut three pices of plain cardstock from your leftovers at 53/4” x 31/8” cored at 1/4” and 51/2” along the long edge. Fold the score lines and add adhesive to the tabs before fixing them, evenly spaced inside the box.

To cover the note pad I simply measured the pad, cut a piece of leftover patterned cardstock for the front and a strip of the other patterned cardstock to attach to the back cover of the paper pad and the front patterned piece of cardstock. A really easy make using very little cardstock and paper but it is always a nice touch to create some little handmade gifts/boxes for gifts.

There is an accompanying video to this tutorial over on Facebook at https://fb.watch/oJPl8Kyv80/ if you would find that useful. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and if you decide to make your own version I would love to see it in the comments below. Also let me know in the comments below what sort of projects you would like to see in future tutorials/videos. Thank you for stopping by.
